Award Recognition Display at the University of Tennessee
HASLAM COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AWARD RECOGNITION DISPLAY
University of Tennessee | Knoxville, Tennessee
Industry: Higher Education
Project Type: Modular Award & Alumni Recognition Display
CLIENT OVERVIEW
Founded in 1914, the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville prepares students for leadership in business through a blend of academic theory and applied learning. As a major academic unit within UT Knoxville, the College serves undergraduate and graduate students while maintaining strong ties with alumni, entrepreneurs, and corporate partners.
The College honors distinguished individuals and organizations through several prestigious awards, including:
- Outstanding Young Alum Award
- Distinguished Alum Award
- Outstanding Entrepreneur Award
- Outstanding Corporate Partner Award
As a result, these recognitions required a high-visibility, long-term award display system that reflected the prestige of the institution while remaining flexible for future updates.
THE CHALLENGE
The College had existing award walls from another vendor that were no longer meeting their expectations.
Issues with the Existing Displays
- Difficult and time-consuming updates as new awardees were added
- Downtime during name changes
- Individual panels that were not flush, creating visible seams and an unfinished appearance
In addition, new constraints also shaped the project:
- The new displays had to mount without damaging the surface of a custom architectural wood wall
- Installation needed to occur with minimal disruption to student traffic
- Panels spanning 143” wide x 77” high had to remain perfectly flush and rigid from top to bottom
- All elements had to align with University of Tennessee design standards
Therefore, the College needed more than a replacement – they needed a refined, modular university award display engineered for long-term performance.
THE STRATEGY
Partners In Recognition, Inc. worked closely with university facilities and the Senior Director of Advancement to:
- Identify structural and mounting limitations of the existing system
- Evaluate the architectural constraints of the custom wood wall
- Design a display that would allow efficient, repeatable updates
- Ensure seamless alignment across large-format panels
Architectural Sensitivity
The architectural wood feature wall could not be penetrated with conventional mounting methods. Surface drilling would have compromised the integrity and appearance of the space.
Consequently, the solution required a non-invasive mounting strategy engineered to support large panels while preserving the finished surface.
Planning for the Future of the Award Recognition Display
The display needed to function not just at installation – but for decades to come.
Planning considered:
- Ongoing additions of new awardees
- Consistency across multiple award categories
- Ease of maintenance
- Structural stability over time
THE SOLUTION
Easy-to-Update Award Recognition Display Panels
PIR engineered a modular update system utilizing:
- A clear printed film sheet positioned behind acrylic panels
- Standoff-mounted acrylic faces for simple removal
- Quick-change film replacement without dismantling the full structure
As a result, award names can now be updated by removing standoff caps, replacing the printed film, and reinstalling the acrylic – significantly reducing downtime and inconvenience.
Engineered Non-Invasive Mounting System
Because mounting could only occur within small, recessed areas of the architectural wood wall, PIR developed a concealed structural support framework:
- Metal support bars anchored within allowable recessed areas
- Wood spacer strips attached to provide clearance
- 2×4 framing mounted to the metal bars to span the full 143” width
- Display panels attached to this independent framework rather than the finished wood surface
As a result, this approach allowed the panels to “float” over the wall – appearing fully integrated while remaining structurally independent.
Results of the award recognition display:
- Zero visible penetrations in finished wood panels
- Structural stability across a 77” height
- Perfectly flush seams across the full 143” span
- A unified appearance across all award categories

EXECUTION
The project moved through several design refinements to ensure all stakeholder requirements were satisfied. Throughout the process, precision and coordination were critical.
Precision Manufacturing Process
- Detailed site measurements were captured by the local PIR consultant
- A comprehensive mechanical drawing documented materials, finishes, dimensions, and mounting details
- Color matching ensured alignment with University of Tennessee design standards
- A full “dry fit” installation was completed at PIR’s facility before crating
Because of this preparation, installation surprises were eliminated and a precise final fit was ensured.
Campus-Sensitive Installation
The PIR installation team:
- Coordinated around the University’s schedule
- Sectioned off work areas to maintain student flow
- Completed installation in one day
As a result, student traffic continued with minimal interruption.
THE OUTCOME OF THE AWARD RECOGNITION DISPLAY
The finished modular award recognition displays:
- Honor distinguished alumni and partners in a high-traffic academic environment
- Maintain perfectly flush seams across 143” x 77” of recognition space
- Allow efficient updates as new awardees are named
- Preserve the architectural integrity of the custom wood wall
- Require zero visible penetrations into finished surfaces
Ultimately, the result is a future-ready, non-invasive university award recognition system that balances architectural stewardship with long-term flexibility.
WHY THIS APPROACH MATTERS FOR UNIVERSITIES
Higher education institutions invest significantly in architectural finishes and branded environments. Therefore, recognition displays must:
- Adapt as award programs evolve
- Maintain visual consistency across years
- Preserve interior design intent
- Minimize maintenance disruption
By engineering a non-invasive hanging solution, PIR delivered a custom university award display that honors achievement while protecting the integrity of the space.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT UNIVERSITY AWARD RECOGNITION DISPLAYS
How do you mount a large award display without drilling into a finished wood wall?
Large academic award displays can be mounted using an independent structural support system anchored only in approved recessed areas. This approach allows panels to “float” over architectural surfaces, preserving the integrity of finished wood walls while maintaining full structural stability.
What is the best way to update names on a university award wall?
A modular system using interchangeable printed film behind removable acrylic panels allows awardee names to be updated quickly. As a result, standoff-mounted panels can be removed, the film replaced and reinstalled without dismantling the entire display — minimizing downtime and disruption.
How can universities keep multi-panel award displays perfectly flush?
Large-format award displays require engineered internal support frameworks to prevent bowing or misalignment. For this reason, a concealed metal and framing system distributes weight evenly across the span, ensuring all seams remain flush and visually seamless.
Can award displays be installed in high-traffic academic environments without disruption?
Yes. With proper pre-measurement, mechanical drawings, and off-site dry fitting, installation can often be completed in a single day. Additionally, coordinating with campus schedules allows student traffic to continue with minimal interruption.
What should universities consider when replacing outdated award walls?
When upgrading award displays, universities should evaluate:
- Ease of future updates
- Architectural surface protection
- Structural stability for large panels
- Alignment with campus design standards
- Long-term expandability
Overall, a thoughtfully engineered system reduces maintenance, preserves interior finishes, and ensures consistent presentation over time.
PEOPLE ALSO ASK
How do universities display alumni awards in modern business school buildings?
Modern universities often use modular, architecturally integrated award displays that align with campus design standards. These systems are engineered to remain flush across large spans, allow easy name updates, and protect finished wall surfaces—especially in high-visibility spaces like business school lobbies.
What is a non-invasive mounting system for wall displays?
A non-invasive mounting system supports display panels using concealed structural framing anchored only in approved recessed areas or structural supports. This allows the display to appear integrated with the wall while avoiding visible drilling or damage to finished architectural surfaces.
How do you design an award wall that can grow over time?
Expandable award walls are designed using modular panel systems and replaceable name inserts. Planning for future additions ensures consistent alignment, structural stability, and minimal disruption as new honorees are added year after year.
