The Mayers Memorial Healthcare lobby donor recognition display was designed to celebrate philanthropic giving while reflecting the natural beauty surrounding the hospital in McArthur, California. Located where the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada meet, the healthcare foundation wanted a donor recognition display that captured the iconic mountain landscape visible from its campus and complemented the newly constructed hospital lobby. 

Rather than creating a traditional donor wall, Partners In Recognition (PIR) designed a sculptural display mounted on top of a pony wall separating the reception desk from the lobby seating area. The finished display serves as both a donor recognition feature and an architectural element that enhances the hospital’s welcoming environment

The Challenge of Designing a Healthcare Donor Recognition Display

The project presented several unique design and engineering challenges beyond simply recognizing donors.

The display needed to:

• Mount securely to the top of a heavily traveled pony wall in the hospital lobby. 
• Meet California’s seismic (earthquake) requirements. 
• Allow visitors to see over the display into the seating area while helping define the space between the reception desk and lobby. 
• Minimize glare from large lobby windows. 
• Recreate the surrounding Intermountain landscape, including the recognizable silhouette of Mount Shasta and nearby mountain ranges. 
• Adapt to changing architectural dimensions because the wall was not built exactly according to the architect’s original drawings. 
• Be redesigned during the COVID-19 pandemic when certain specified materials became unavailable. 
• Include detailed installation instructions because hospital COVID restrictions prevented PIR’s installers from traveling to the site. 

Strategy for the Healthcare Donor Recognition Display

Rather than relying on standard donor plaques, PIR designed a layered donor recognition display that blended architectural materials with custom artwork inspired by Northern California’s landscape.

Using photographs and geographic references from the McArthur area, the design team carefully illustrated the surrounding mountain ranges to create a recognizable skyline across the top of the display. The etched mountain silhouette gives the installation a sense of place while reinforcing the Foundation’s connection to its community. 

To reduce glare from the hospital’s large lobby windows, PIR selected frosted ½-inch acrylic as the primary display material. Donor names were permanently etched into the acrylic panels, while brushed stainless steel accents, stainless steel standoff hardware and architectural wood finishes complemented the hospital’s modern interior.
