Outdoor Memorial Display for Hoag Hospital

Client Overview

Hoag Hospital, located in Newport Beach, is a nationally recognized healthcare system known for its patient-centered care and commitment to community impact. As part of its campus, Hoag developed the Lucy Curci Memorial Garden – a serene outdoor environment designed to memorialize loved ones while providing a peaceful space for reflection. Within this space, PIR developed an outdoor memorial display that complements the garden’s calm and restorative atmosphere.

As the garden underwent a complete redesign, Hoag sought to reimagine its existing memorial wall into a system that aligned with the new landscape vision while supporting long-term fundraising goals.

The Challenge of the New Outdoor Memorial Display

Hoag’s existing outdoor memorial display no longer aligned with the updated garden experience or operational needs. The new solution needed to address several key challenges:

  • Blend with the environment: The recognition display needed to feel like part of the garden – not the focal point – supporting a calm, serene, and “Zen-like” atmosphere.
  • Architectural alignment: The design had to follow a concept already approved by stakeholders and integrate seamlessly with the landscape architect’s vision.
  • Outdoor durability: The system would be exposed to coastal elements, including moisture, dust, and temperature variation.
  • Ongoing updates: With approximately 800 donor names and new additions each year, the display needed to allow for efficient, repeatable updates without replacing the entire system.
  • Subtle visibility: The recognition needed to remain legible and meaningful without feeling heavy, institutional, or memorial-like.
  • Lighting sensitivity: Illumination needed to be soft and integrated – enhancing visibility without overpowering the garden ambiance.
  • Engineering complexity: The solution required coordination with structural and electrical considerations, including concealed wiring, UL-rated components, and constructability in a live healthcare environment.

The Strategy

PIR approached the project as a fully integrated recognition system, balancing design, engineering, and long-term functionality.

1. Architectural Integration
Rather than creating a traditional memorial wall, PIR designed a linear, panel-based system spanning approximately 35 feet along the garden edge. The display was intentionally understated – allowing the surrounding landscaping to remain the primary visual experience.

2. Material & Aesthetic Direction

  • Introduced cool-toned, translucent panels inspired by the hospital’s glass façade and sky reflections
  • Selected materials (such as acrylic/3form-style elements) that provide:
    • Subtle color
    • Light diffusion
    • Long-term outdoor durability
  • Eliminated heavy visual elements (e.g., bulky supports, dark tones, literal graphics) in favor of a clean, minimal, contemporary palette

3. “Floating Panel” System

  • Panels were engineered to stand off the structure, creating a floating effect
  • Reduced visible structural supports by integrating narrow stainless-steel posts with concealed connections and internal wiring
  • Designed spacing between panels to allow glimpses of greenery behind, reinforcing the garden experience

4. Flexible Recognition Approach

  • Developed a system using replaceable acrylic name panels, allowing updates without reworking the entire display
  • Designed for biannual updates, with panels swapped strategically rather than fully replaced
  • Maintained consistent typography and readability (larger point sizes for clarity)

5. Integrated Lighting Design

  • Explored multiple lighting strategies (front, back, and top illumination)
  • Final direction emphasized soft front lighting to highlight memorial wall names
  • Positioned light sources close to panels (within ¼”–⅜”) for optimal visibility
  • Designed dimmable, integrated LED lighting with concealed components to avoid visual clutter

6. Constructability & Engineering Coordination

  • Designed system for mounting to a pre-poured concrete base using anchored steel plates
  • Ensured all lighting and electrical components could meet UL certification requirements as a complete assembly
  • Provided guidance for:
    • Structural connections
    • Electrical integration
    • Shop drawings and installation details

The Solution for Their Outdoor Memorial Display

The final design is a refined, architectural memorial recognition system that seamlessly integrates into the Lucy Curci Memorial Garden.

Key features include:

  • A continuous row of translucent panels with subtle blue tones
  • Minimal stainless-steel structure with concealed supports and wiring
  • Floating acrylic name panels for easy updates and long-term flexibility
  • Integrated, dimmable LED lighting designed for soft, even illumination
  • Thoughtfully placed quote panels to enhance emotional connection without overwhelming the space
  • A restrained, elegant composition that complements – not competes with – the surrounding landscape

The Outcome

The Hoag outdoor memorial display transforms donor acknowledgment into an experiential environment:

  • Enhances the garden’s purpose as a place of reflection and healing
  • Supports long-term fundraising efforts through an adaptable recognition system
  • Reduces maintenance complexity with efficient update processes
  • Elevates the viewer’s experience with a design that feels meaningful, modern, and enduring
  • Aligns with Hoag’s brand and architecture, reinforcing a cohesive campus identity

Project Impact of this Outdoor Memorial Display

This project shows how an outdoor memorial display can evolve beyond a static installation into a thoughtfully integrated part of the environment – supporting both immediate recognition needs and long-term institutional goals.
